Money in the Bank (2024) - Wikipedia

WWE Money in the Bank went down on Saturday, July 6, 2024. Triple H promised on X that this event will change the landscape of WWE. We most certainly weren't expecting a shocking retirement of John Cena. But some of the things that happened on this show came as now surprise. As WWE prepared for SummerSlam in less then a month, this was an important stop in the process of building for the "largest event of the summer." Let's break down each match from the show tonight.

Men’s Money In the Bank Ladder Match

Drew McIntyre VS Jey Uso VS Chad Gable VS Andrade VS LA Knight VS Carmelo Hayes

Result: Drew McIntyre wins the MIB Contract

A great way for WWE to kick off the show. Andrade came out of this looking incredible. He put his body on the line in this match. Jey Uso looked like he was going to win until Drew threw a ladder at him from the ground, allowing Drew to climb the ladder and recover the briefcase. LA Knight didn’t have a strong outing as he was pretty forgettable in this match. But it was clear Drew was winning the MIB contract. He disappeared and let people take each other out, waiting for his perfect time to strike. After he won, it was clear that he was cashing in later in the night.

Intercontinental Championship Match

© Sami Zayn VS Bron Breakker

Result: Sami Zayn wins by pin

I was shocked by the way WWE booked this match. Sami has had a great run, beating Gunther for the belt at WrestleMania. But Bron Breakker is the future of this company. He does everything so well. The way Sami out wrestled Bron and beat him clean from hitting his Helluva Kick in the corner made Bron look really weak. It seems like WWE is really committed to running with Sami and making him into a top star on RAW. Michael Cole’s commentary “how does Sami Zayn keep finding ways to win.” My fear is that they’re not going to continue pushing Bron, and that at SummerSlam he won’t have a spot. If this is the first of what’s going to be a full feud, then I’m here for it, but if Monday we don’t hear from Bron for a couple weeks this might have been a missed opportunity to put a young star over by WWE.

World Heavyweight Championship Match

© Damian Priest VS Seth Rollins

Result: Drew McIntyre cashes in his MIB Contract

The initial match between these two received a “this is awesome” chant but it was far from that. Seth looked like he gained some weight when he was off rehabbing his injury, but he still moved pretty well. Priest screwed up a couple spots in this match, one where he looked to be attempting a spring board but missed his mark, ending in Rollins catching him and then landing awkwardly. This also was filled with strikes on the feet that didn’t get sold. How many superkicks can you hit without a guy going down. They spent the entire match looking up the ramp, which gave away the surprise to everyone that Drew was coming down to cash in his contract. I was done with these two when they clearly mistimed the final cover that was supposed to be interrupted by Drew’s music. Instead, Seth let go of the leg randomly, and looked shocked while looking up the ramp to nothing. About 10 seconds later, Drew’s music and he came down. It was quite terrible.

Triple Threat for World Heavyweight Championship

© Damian Priest VS Seth Rollins VS Drew McIntyre

Result: Damian Priest wins by pinning Drew McIntyre

CM Punk came into the ring as soon as Drew was about to win the match. Punk brutally beat McIntyre instead of just screwing McIntyre over. He rolled Drew into the ring and allowed Damian pin Drew. A couple interesting things here. The first, before the match, WWE teased Judgment Day turning on Damian as Finn looked annoyed by Priest telling them to stay backstage. The other, Seth Rollins can’t challenge Damien Priest as long as he’s champion. Seth had to be held back after the match by Corey Graves trying to get at Punk. But with Punk facing Drew at SummerSlam, and Priest facing Gunther, where does this leave Seth Rollins for the biggest event of the summer? The point of professional wrestling is to keep you guessing, and they did that with this segment.

Special Announcement

John Cena announces his retirement

Trish announced a special surprise to the Toronto crowd. Out came John Cena who ran to the ring. He wasted no time in telling the people that he’s retiring. This caused shock and sadness amongst all the people in attendance. He basically announced his farewell tour, and said that this upcoming WrestleMania will feature his last match. An interesting decision that I truly hope is not real, but part of a grander story. Does this mean we’ll get to see more of John on shows?

Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match

Tiffany Stratton VS Naomi VS Chelsea Green VS Lyra Valkyria VS Zoey Stark VS Iyo Sky

Result: Tiffany Stratton wins by the MIB Contract

Some really brutal spots in this match with some of the competitors smashing the back of their heads on the ladder. Naomi took an Alabama Slam on a ladder and cracked her head on the corner of the ladder. Zoey Stark had some close calls in this match as well. It was pretty awesome how much this crowd was behind Chelsea Green. And in typical WWE fashion, when it looked like she was going to capture the briefcase, Tiffany Stratton appeared out of the picture to knock Chelsea Green off the ladder through tables staged outside the ring. Tiffany Stratton’s win signals that a championship victory for the young prospect is likely. She’s been red hot on SmackDown, and WWE has built her perfectly. This was really well done.

Match Grade: B+

Six-Man Tag Team Match

The Bloodline (Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, & Tama Tonga) (W/ Tonga Loa) VS Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, & Cody Rhodes

Result: Solo Sikoa pins Cody Rhodes for the win

A pretty chaotic match from the start. The first thing that stood out to me was why they decided not to make this an 8-man tag match. Adding someone like LA Knight could have given someone else main event experience. Tonga Loa looked awkward standing there in a suit. Jacob Fatu had a whisper in the wind in this match that got more air than Jeff Hardy ever got, and he did it with no momentum. The referee had a rough match, consistently getting smashed in the corner. Solo would eventually use all the chaos without a referee to pin Cody Rhodes. Interesting move to have Cody take the pin on a PPV. I hope this is going to tie into a larger storyline, because otherwise I don’t understand that decision. Fun match though, I think all 6 guys played their part.
