BreakingDown UFC Fight Night: Lemos VS Jandiroba

UFC Fight Night: Lemos vs. Jandiroba (Main Card)

Heavyweight Bout

Mohammed Usman (11-4) VS Thomas Petersen (9-2)

Result: Thomas Petersen wins by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

For such a large and menacing guy, Usman’s accuracy is a problem. He was a more active fighter, and everything he landed looked like it hurt, but he was 63 for 185 on striking, while Thomas Petersen landed at a far more efficient clip. Not to mention Usman has yet to develop any type of ground game. He got taken down twice in this fight, and looked like he wanted nothing to do with grappling. This was a perfectly executed gameplan by Petersen and his team at Spartan MMA. The traditional boxer mixed it up with Usman. We shouldn’t be surprised as he used a submission to impress Dana White on the Contender Series last year. Great win for Petersen!

Women’s Flyweight Bout

Luana Carolina (11-4) VS Lucie Pudilova (14-10)

Result: Luana Carolina wins by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

I was really impressed with Carolina’s striking while facing a traditional striker in Lucie Pudilova. This is the 3rd win in a row for the Brazilian Muay Thai fighters. Carolina fought fearlessly, and actually forced Pudilova to take things off the feet and look for success in the ground game. Carolina’s incredible 94 significant strikes is proof that Carolina was more effective and dangerous as the fight progressed. Carolina is still improving, and already looks like a completely different fighter who got knocked out by Molly McCann in 2022.

Lightweight Bout

Loik Radzhabov (18-6-1) VS Trey Ogden (18-6)

Result: Trey Ogden wins by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Trey Ogden seems to be figuring out his game at 34. He’s won 2-fights in a row now, both by unanimous decision. This was a tremendous fight selection taking on Radzhabov who is a boxer. Ogden scored 4 out of 5 takedowns, and controlled the fight on the ground, eclipsing 9.5 minutes of control time. When they were on their feet, Radzhabov had Ogden reeling. 42-24 significant strikes in favor of Radzhabov. Ogden prevailed, and looked relieved when the fight went to the cards. He’s still got a ton of work fighting in a stacked lightweight division, but this fight is something he can build off of.

Women’s Flyweight Bout

Miranda Maverick (16-5) VS Dione Barbosa (7-3)

Result: Miranda Maverick wins by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

Miranda Maverick is still only 27 years old. She’s got a lot of potential. Barbosa has come out of nowhere after going on a run in LFA and winning her first 2 UFC fights. But Maverick was on a different level. Maverick controlled 8 minutes of this fight, and outstruck Barbosa 102-47. Maverick’s pressure kept Barbosa desperate and uncomfortable all fight. She just wasn’t active enough to get on a roll, and fought this fight too safe. Maverick is now on a 3-fight winning streak.

Bantamweight Bout

Brian Kelleher (24-16) VS Cody Gibson (21-10)

Result: Cody Gibson wins by 1st round submission (Arm Triangle)

This was tough to watch what could be the last fight for Brian Kelleher. This is his fourth loss in a row and he was finished in every one of those losses. Gibson was in the hot seat here. He lost the final of TUF, and lost the follow up to Miles Johns. This was a must win, and he took this to the ground immediately. Gibson knew a firefight only benefited Kelleher. Once on the ground, Gibson controlled the fight. He showed off those submission skills that got him noticed in the Ultimate Fighter 31.

Featherweight Bout

Jeongyeong Lee (11-2) VS Hyder Amil (10-0)

Result: Hyder Amil wins by 1st round KO (Punches)

Hyder Amil has been dominant in his 3 fights with the UFC. Lee was a major step up in competition, having been 2-0 in the UFC and on an 8 fight winning streak. Lee was the star of the Road to the UFC series. Amil put Lee away early in the first round, outstriking Lee 42-4. It was a pummeling, and a terrible showing for Lee who looked like a promising international talent. Amil should get a UFC unranked veteran next to test him. But so far, the unbeaten 34 year old looks like an emerging contender in the featherweight division.

Featherweight Bout

Doohoo Choi (15-4-1) VS Bill Algeo (18-9)

Result: Doohoo Choi wins by 2nd round TKO (Punch)

The Korean Superboy needed this win. Although he’s put on excellent showings, he hasn’t won a fight since 2016. That stat feels crazy, that he’s gone 8 years without winning, but he’s been living off the momentum of the HOF fight with Cub Swanson. Algeo looked like he was going to find a way to win this fight if it went to decision. But Choi’s power was felt early, as he rocked Algeo a couple times. In the second, you saw Algeo go into panic mode as Choi picked up the pace. His eye was cut badly, and it looked like Choi landed clean right on the spot where he was cut. That was the end of the fight.

Flyweight Bout

(14) Cody Durden (16-6-1) VS Bruno Silva (14-5-2)

Result: Bruno Silva wins by 2nd round TKO (Punches)

Cody Durden got a little careless in this fight with his striking. He found mild success on the ground where he was able to slow Silva down. But Silva looked very sharp standing up, and had momentum built. His power is a real problem, as not many flyweights hit as hard as he does. He put Durden away in the 2nd in dominant fashion.

Lightweight Bout

Kurt Holobaugh (22-8) VS Kaynan Kruschewsky (15-3)

Result: Kurt Holobaugh wins by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

This was not the type of performance where Kurt Holobaugh is going to feel good in victory. He let a guy who felt like a warmup for him keep this fight too close for comfort. Kruschewsky is a former champion in Jung Fight. Holobaugh felt why. Although Holobaugh is no stranger to grappling and ground based fighting, Krueshewsky found some early success. He was 3 for 3 on takedowns, and went for 2 submissions. Holobaugh is lucky to pull out the victory. He will need to analyze this and improve, because performances like these will get him into trouble real soon in the lightweight division.

Featherweight Bout

Steve Garcia (16-5) VS Seungwoo Choi (11-7)

Result: Steve Garcia wins by 1st round TKO (Punches)

The power of Steve Garcia is being recognized. His 4th straight win by KO. He’s been fighting at a high level since 2013, having debuted in Bellator. He competed there until 2017. But it was his 2022 knockout of Chase Hopper that got him recognized. He hasn’t really looked back since. This felt like a touchup fight for Garcia, but he still had to respect the power of Choi.

Women’s Strawweight Bout

(3) Amanda Lemos (14-4-1) VS VS (5) Virna Jandiroba (21-3)

Result: Virna Jandiroba wins by 2nd round submission (armbar)

Virna had a gameplan, and that was to not stand in front of Lemos, and keep her neutralized on the ground. She did just that. She smothered Lemos on the ground, having 6:27 of control time. She attempted 4 submissions before locking in a painful armbar. This is Jandiroba’s 4th win in a row against elite competition. Her last loss was in 2021 to Amanda Ribas. This was the follow up to the February decision victory over Mackenzie Dern for Lemos. She was hoping a win here would get her back into the title picture where she was a year ago.
