2024 Copa America BreakDown: The Semi-Finals

2024 Copa América - Wikipedia

The Semi-Finals have arrived in what has been a disappointing Copa America for fans of the US Men’s National Teams. To add salt to the wound, Canada has been on a run of a lifetime, and now has another crack at beating Argentina. Colombia made a statement in the semi’s and now look to cap off a run of a lifetime with some hardware. Let’s break down both Semi-Finals games from this week.

  1. Argentina VS Canada

Result: Argentina wins 2-0

Besides Drake betting $300K on Canada to beat Argentina, was there anybody who really thought Canada was going to beat the 2022 World Cup Champions. The result was underwhelmingly the same as Argentina once again shut out the Canadians by a score of 2-0. I have to give Canada credit, this was better than I think anybody could have imagined them fairing against Argentina on a big stage like Copa America. If Argentina beats Colombia in the final, we have to look at Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez as someone who’s been the catalyst on this team. His goal in the 22nd minute of this game dispelled any hope for an upset from Canada. And with the underdogs on the ropes, the reliable Argentine star Lionel Messi hit the kill shot in the 51st minute with his 14th career goal in Copa America. Canada got a little chippy at the end of the game, but Argentina handled themselves like the proven winners and ignored any attempt to throw them off their game. Now, they will play the fast and explosive Colombian side who’ve been on a historic run. Colombia has been touted as the favorites as Brazil and Uruguay have taken shots at Colombia and missed. Argentina is a bit different because of their proven history of recent success. This team has figured out how to win, and in my opinion will be the favorites in every game they play in.

  1. Colombia VS Uruguay

Result: Colombia wins 1-0

Colombia have to stay focused if they intend to win the Copa America Cup. Colombia was fortunate that Jefferson Lerma scored in the 39th minute, and that Uruguay came out flat on offense and couldn’t convert any of their opportunities to goals. Colombia’s Daniel Muñoz was given a red card. This led to Uruguay putting pressure on Colombia for most of the 2nd half. But Colombia was able to overcome the lack of possession and escape regulation with a tight win. At the end of the game, there was a little bit of a shoving match. Colombia are an exciting team to watch, their speed and explosiveness make them tough to defend. But Argentina is experienced and plays a very composed and balanced game. Colombia will have to jump out on Argentina like they did against Uruguay if they are to beat the 2022 World Cup Champions.
