A Son for a Son: Breaking Down House of Dragon S2 E1
Written By: Danny Albers
Summer has begun, and it wouldn’t be Summer without HBO giving us a juicy series to fill up our Sunday nights every week. House of The Dragon has returned for season 2, and the Targaryen civil war has officially begun. After a slow paced season 1 ended with the shocking death of Lucerys at the hand of Aemond and his dragon Vhagar, war is now inevitable between both Targaryen sides of the family without King Viserys to mend the ill will and temper of his family after dying from disease.
Episode’s Recap
It seems Rhaenyra and co. are looking to the Wall to elicit the help of Cregan Stark and the North. Stark promises to provide 2,000 men to fight for Rhaenyra’s cause. With the news of Lucerys death sending sorrow throughout Dragonstone, Daemon begins to try and find a hired hand to kill Aemond and his dragon Vhagar for causing this death. Tensions and differences begin to arise on the council in King's Landing, due to the immaturity and careless actions of King Aegon II and the smart and thoughtful council of Otto Hightower. He’s enthralled with his young son Jaehaerys, and seems to be ignoring the issues with Dragonstone. Just as Alicent is enthralled with her private guard Criston Cole and their love affair. Mysaria is recovered after surviving a brothel fire, and Daemon leverages freedom over her to help him find someone inside King’s Landing who can assassinate Aemond. “Blood” the watch guard and “Cheese” the ratcatcher. Searching the Red Keep, they accidentally enter Helaena’s quarters (sister-wife of Aegon), and they kill Jaehaerys instead of Aegon. Escaping with Jaehaerys twin sister Jaehaera, she runs to Alicent’s chambers to find her sleeping with Criston Cole, revealing the secret that the two have been having an affair. She notifies them that “they’ve killed the boy.”
BreakDown
This episode should really be titled “a mistake for a mistake.” If Lucerys death was going to spark retribution and vengeful murderous intent, what would the mistake of killing an infant of a reckless and unpredictable king do? Although war is inevitable, there still wouldn’t be a lot of sympathy if the assassins had killed Aemond. Aemond deserved it for his temper and instigating and murderous actions. But an innocent infant child is now the victim of a heinous crime, and unimaginable rage and grief will take over. This war is bound to take more victims as the series goes on, and it likely will spread like a virus outside of King’s Landing and Dragonstone and onto the people who will inevitably fight this battle for the Targaryen’s. It’s becoming difficult to choose a side as you want justice for Rhaenyra because you feel sympathy for her, but she has the unhinged psycho Daemon fighting the war for her. This season doesn’t need filler and talking to build the story, we’re about to be thrown into the thick of it. Get your seatbelts ready.
