The Career of iron Mike Tyson: Part 3

May 20, 2018
Mike Tyson VS Mitch Green
Result: Tyson (21-0) wins by unanimous decision
Kevin Rooney had a big part in Mike Tyson becoming Iron Mike. Tillis and Green were guys who really had no chance of beating Mike, but would hang in there with him. Mike Tyson was so well managed and so taken care of, and you can see that in the early stages of his career. I think these two fights were what helped him become a champion a little later down the road in his career. Tillis did a lot of running, while Green did a lot of holding, and that was important for Tyson to learn how to not get frustrated and not beat himself.

Mike Tyson VS Reggie Gross
Result: Mike Tyson (22-0) wins by 1st round TKO (2:36)

Mike Tyson returned to his early KO ways. One of the great sequences in Tyson’s career was the insane bob and weave action with the lethal left hook putting Gross on the ground.

June 28, 1986
Mike Tyson VS William Hosea
Result: Tyson (23-0) wins by 1st round KO (2:03)

This was a heavy mismatch, and the build up to it felt like a warm up fight before the Boyd fight.

July 11, 1986
Mike Tyson VS Lorenzo Boyd
Result: Tyson (24-0) wins by 2nd round KO (1:43)
Mike Tyson at this point was averaging more than a fight per month. Boyd was supposed to be a serious test for Tyson, a fighter 21 pound lighter, but much faster, and had a dangerous jab. It was still predicted to be a fast fight and the fans weren't convinced, they new that Tyson was going to squad Boyd, which he did. This was Mike Tyson's first fight as a non-teenager.

July 26, 1986
Mike Tyson VS Marvis Frazier
Result: Tyson (25-0) wins by 1st round KO (0:30)
This was Tyson's biggest fight of his career to this point, fighting Joe Frazier's son Marvis, who's only  loss was against former heavyweight champ Larry Holms.

August 17, 1986
Mike Tyson VS José Ribalta
Result: Tyson (26-0) wins by 10th round TKO (1:37)
Tyson would go on to fight a fighter bigger in stature, and tough as hell. But he was easy picking for Tyson because he was so much slower. But it was still a fight that made Tyson work, and I think this is a very big reason why Tyson would be so successful in the championship fight that would come next.

September 6, 1986
Mike Tyson VS Alfonso Ratliff
Result: Tyson (27-0) wins by 2nd Round TKO (1:41)
This was the last fight before Tyson would challenge Trevor Berbick for the WBC Heavyweight Title. Tyson really looked outstanding at this point in his career. Ratliff wasn't a terrible fighter, and Tyson came into that second round and finished him quick.

November 22, 1986
Mike Tyson VS Trevor Berbick (for the WBC Heavyweight Title)
Result: Tyson (28-0) wins by 2nd Round TKO (2:35)
You know a fighter is special when he comes into a fight with a heavyweight champion as the challenger, and dominates every aspect of the fight. Tyson kept hitting the same punch on Berbick, and Berbick had absolutely no answer. The first title of Tyson's career was maybe the most impressive fight of his career.

March 7, 1987
Mike Tyson VS James Smith (WBC & WBA Heavyweight Titles)
Result: Mike Tyson (29-0) wins by unanimous decision

May 30, 1987
Mike Tyson VS Pinklon Thomas (WBC & WBA Titles)
Result: Tyson (30-0) wins by 6th Round TKO (2:00)

Tyson responded well after the Smith fight, having a really complete fight in his second title defense. It also was good job focusing on this fight where Tyson had nothing to gain in this fight with Tucker up next to unify all three heavyweight titles. But he tired out Thomas, and in the sixth round put him away without taking any damage at all. It was a different story where just a couple weeks prior Tyson was really tested and took some damage from Smith.
